Review: useful technical reports

Modelling framework documents: water, soils, pesticides

Sunday 15 July 2007, by Julien Moeys

(for the French version | Pour la version française)

Reports and projects presented below are related to the following topics:

- Modelling water flux;

- Modelling pesticides transfer (risks) toward surface or groundwater;

- Good Modelling Practices, GMP (in those domains);

- Mitigation strategies for those pollutions;

- Pre-registration evaluation strategies of molecules fates in the environment (with modelling);

Those lists are certainly not extensive. It is essentially ’grey literature’ (generally available on internet) important in the domains cited above, and that might be useful for any person working on that topics.

Summary

- European Water Framework Directive

- Research projects.

- Lists of useful websites.

- Framework documents.

- Bibliographic files .RIS ou .BIB of those references

European Water Framework Directive

The “2000/60/CE Directive of the European parliament and of the Council” on the “Community action in the field of water policy” is available in several languages: english , or french .

The ’Water Information System for Europe’ website provides more ’understandable’ information on water management in Europe, and lists european research project related to that topics.

Research projects

- Focus work groups FOCUS (FOrum for Co-ordination of pesticide fate models and their Use and their thematic sub-groups.

  • FOCUS Ground Water Scenarios (vertical transfer toward groundwater resources).

- The European project FOOTPRINT, of which several documents are cited below (’creating tools for pesticide risk assessment and management in Europe’).

- A set of European projects related to modelling practices at the watershed and/or river basins scale (Harmoni...). Those projects notably emphasis on interaction/communication between stakeholders and scientists, as well as quality insurance topics. Even though they are related to the large scale of river basins, such methodologies and framework might sometimes be useful for more local approaches based on modelling:

  • HarmoniQUA, ’Harmonising Quality Assurance in model based catchment and river basin management’ (2002-2005). A documents list;
  • Harmoni-CA, ’Harmonised Modelling tools for Integrated Basin Management’ (2001-2006?). The project aims to provide ’guidance and methodologies based on support and consensus’ to implement the European Water Framework;
  • Harmoni-RIB, ’Harmonised Techniques and Representative River Basin Data for Assessment and Use of Uncertainty Information in Integrated Water Management’ (2002-2006). The project aims ’develop methodologies for quantifying uncertainty and its propagation from the raw data to concise management information’. A publication list is available, as well as the different reports produced.

- The APECOP project, ’Effective approaches for Assessing the Predicted Environmental Concentrations of Pesticides: A proposal supporting the harmonised registration of pesticides in Europe’ (1999-2002). final report , and publication list.

- A guide produced by the Good Modelling Practice workgroup of the Dutch Standard Water Framework’.

- Another guide on Good Modelling Practice produced by the Murray-Darling basin commission in Australia.

Lists of useful websites

I regularly feed a websites list, notably related to my PhD work:

- A research project list, of which many are related to soil-water-pesticides topics.

- A website list related to pesticides, with a sub-list for modelling.
